Diabetic Vascular Complications

Diabetic vascular care, every step matters

Narrowed leg arteries, non-healing ulcers and limb-threatening ischemia — treated under one roof at Hudson County’s only in-office vascular lab.

Overview

What "diabetic vascular complications" actually means

Over time, high blood sugar damages the inner lining of blood vessels and the small nerves that travel alongside them. The result is a cluster of related problems — narrowed leg arteries (peripheral artery disease), reduced sensation in the feet (neuropathy), and wounds that struggle to heal because oxygen and nutrients cannot reach the tissue.

Left alone, these problems compound: a small cut that would heal in a week becomes an ulcer, then an infection, then — in the worst case — an amputation. The fix is rarely a single procedure. It is a coordinated plan: restore blood flow, manage the diabetes itself, and protect the feet for life.

Symptoms & risk factors

If two or more of these apply to you, a baseline vascular evaluation is one of the highest-yield prevention steps you can take.

FAQ

Common questions

Real, specific answers from our team. If your question is not here, our front desk can usually answer it in a 5-minute phone call.

Can diabetic vascular complications be reversed?

Established tissue damage cannot be undone, but progression can almost always be slowed — and in many cases reversed in functional terms. Restoring blood flow with angioplasty, controlling HbA1c and quitting smoking together return most patients to walking, healing wounds and avoiding amputation.

How is this different from regular peripheral artery disease (PAD) care?

Diabetes changes how vessels narrow — often in smaller arteries below the knee — and how wounds heal. Standard PAD pathways miss these patterns. Our team images and treats those distal vessels and coordinates wound care under one roof.

Will I need surgery?

Most patients do not. Diagnostic angiograms and the majority of interventions (angioplasty, stents, GAE) are minimally invasive, in-office and use only local anesthesia. Open surgical bypass is reserved for the small fraction of cases that need it — and we coordinate that referral.

How long until I see results after treatment?

Patients who undergo angioplasty for claudication typically notice walking distance improve within days. Wound-healing improvements after revascularization usually appear within 2–6 weeks alongside dedicated foot care.

Does insurance cover diabetic vascular evaluation?

Yes — evaluation, ABI and diagnostic ultrasound are covered by Medicare and most commercial plans when there is a documented vascular concern. Our concierge verifies coverage before your visit and explains any out-of-pocket cost up front.

I have no symptoms but I have had diabetes for 10+ years — should I still be screened?

Yes. PAD in diabetics is often silent for years before the first ulcer or rest-pain episode. A baseline vascular screen at 10+ years of diabetes (sooner with smoking or other risk factors) is one of the highest-yield prevention steps you can take.

Stories from patients we have treated

Names changed where requested. Every quote below comes from a patient seen at one of our Hudson County locations.

★★★★★

“My foot ulcer had not healed in 8 months. Within 6 weeks of Dr. Richard’s angioplasty it was closed. I cannot believe I almost lost the toe.”

Carlos M. North Bergen
★★★★★

“I have been diabetic for 17 years. The fact that endocrinology and vascular were in the same building meant I actually finished the plan instead of dropping referrals.”

Linda P. Jersey City
★★★★★

“Walking was painful after one block. The procedure was done in their office, I drove myself home. Now I walk two miles most evenings.”
