How Long Does Physical Therapy Take?

how long does physical therapy take

The Time Required For Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is generally recommended for improving flexibility and strengthening the body’s muscles. It is commonly used for those who need assistance recovering from a new injury, surgery, or chronic pain.

Many people believe that physical therapy takes too long to show results and does not work well. However, it is essential to note that the frequency and duration of physical therapy will depend on many factors.

Physical therapy may take 2 to 3 months to show effective results. Keep scrolling to learn more about physical therapy, its various aspects, and what factors impact its duration.

Physical Therapy A Path To Recovery

Physical therapy or physiotherapy, is a form of health care that uses different massage techniques and therapy tools to help improve mobility and flexibility. It can also help regain strength and reduce pain. Moreover, a timely and committed approach to physical therapy can also help eliminate the need for surgery in some cases.

This form of treatment can be used for a range of injuries and illnesses, such as peripheral artery disease, which can affect the normal function of body parts and restrict or pain their movement. Additionally, physical therapy can be used to improve muscle and joint strength, helping improve the quality of life.

As a noninvasive form of treatment, physical therapy offers simple and affordable solutions for a range of problems. Often combined with different forms of exercise and massage, physical therapy requires consistent dedication to the program to show its effectiveness. When you visit a physical therapist with a pain or dysfunction complaint, they will assess the affected area and develop a targeted plan to help support the restoration of movement. The assessment may also include evaluation tests for balance, function, strength, and range of motion.

Depending on this assessment, the physical therapist may suggest different physical exercises, stretches, and physiotherapy treatments, the duration of which will vary with your progress rate. In addition, they will recommend a few lifestyle changes that aid the treatment.

How Long Does Physical Therapy Take?

Since physical therapy treatment plans are tailored to an individual’s needs, their duration varies with the patient’s problem, the severity of the problem, and the patient’s progress rate, depending on the patient’s body’s recovery ability.

Moreover, different types of tissue heal at varying rates, thus changing the time required for physical therapy. However, while the timeline for the treatment plan may vary, the introductory session commonly takes up to 90 minutes, as it includes a thorough assessment of your condition, followed by an initial therapy.

Further, depending on the requirements and the developed treatment plan, you may be required to take physical therapy sessions 2-3 times a week, the duration of which may vary between 30 and 90 minutes, according to the physiotherapy treatments included.

The length of the overall treatment program varies with different factors and chiefly depends on your healing rate. The physical therapist will keep track of your function, strength, pain management, and range of motion to determine how many more sessions are needed.

how long does physical therapy usually take

Following are the general timelines of physical therapy treatments according to the tissue affected:

Muscle

Since muscles have a rich blood supply, they tend to heal faster than any other tissue. However, restoring function and alleviating pain can take 2-4 weeks of physical therapy sessions.

Tendon

These can take 4-6 weeks for proper healing due to a comparatively lower blood supply. However, the area affected may also vary the time required for healing since you may put more strain on certain areas such as your legs, in your daily routine, thus elongating their healing time.

Ligaments

A ligament healing with physical therapy can last for up to 12 weeks on average. While minor tears may take around a month, a complete tear requires surgery, after which you may require 6-8 months of physical therapy and exercises.

Cartilage

Due to a lack of blood supply, cartilage treatments take more than 12 weeks with physical therapy.

Bones

The physical therapy timeline for bones requires 6-8 weeks in case of a simple fracture. However, a complex fracture followed by reconstruction surgery can take months to heal. In addition, you may require a few sessions to help strengthen the weakened muscles surrounding the bone.

Therefore, the time required for physical therapy varies with each person and case. However, it is vital to remember that it is important to stay dedicated to the treatment plan if you want to see effective results.

Factors Affecting Physical Therapy Time

Besides the type of tissue, various factors affect the physical therapy time, including:

physical therapy time

Regularity

Physical therapy can only be effective if the patient follows the instructions of the physical therapist. For quicker results, it is important to follow the structured treatment plan and comply with the rest and exercise requirements suggested by the therapist.

Patient Lifestyle

Your physical therapist may also recommend exercises to perform at home and suggest a few activities to avoid as a part of the treatment plan. Incorporating these tips helps support physical therapy. In addition, they can also help modify and give tips for essential duties to enable proper recovery without interrupting your work.

Body’s Response

The time required for physical therapy highly depends on your body’s recovery and response rate. While an elderly individual may take more time to heal from an injury, a young person may recover faster.

Physical Therapy Plan Designed For Your Success

Physical therapy often consists of a long treatment plan. However, when followed correctly, this can help avoid complications and surgeries and improve the quality of your life. Therefore, finding the best physical therapist is important. Moreover, due to the prolonged duration of the treatment, it is normal to ask questions about physical therapy costs. At Advanced Medical Group, we have a group of well-trained physical therapists who can help improve your condition, devising a tailored approach for your treatment.

Whether it is recovering from an injury, reducing pain, or post-surgery healing, our experts can help you at the best physical therapist costs. Contact us today to book your first session.
