Radiofrequency Ablation
Radiofrequency energy heats and closes the diseased vein, redirecting blood to healthy veins.

What it is
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins and venous insufficiency. A thin catheter is guided into the affected vein through a small entry point and delivers radiofrequency energy that heats and seals the vein walls shut. Blood is rerouted to healthy veins, and the appearance of varicose veins improves over time.
RFA addresses the underlying cause of venous insufficiency, easing pain, swelling and discomfort with excellent long-term success rates. It is performed under local anaesthesia with minimal downtime.
Frequently asked questions
How does radiofrequency ablation work?
A catheter delivers radiofrequency energy to the vein wall; the heat causes the vein to collapse and seal, so blood reroutes to healthy veins.
Is it painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so discomfort during treatment is minimal. Mild soreness in the days afterward is possible.
How long does a session take?
Typically 30 to 60 minutes, performed on an outpatient basis.
How long does relief last?
By sealing the diseased vein, RFA provides durable, long-term relief. Outcomes vary by individual, and your specialist will advise on follow-up care.
Is RFA right for everyone?
RFA may not suit every patient or medical condition. Our team assesses your individual circumstances to recommend the best option.
